‘’My work contains mixed media: photography, sanding, painting, embroidery and textiles.
I’m interested in the idea of revealing, by hiding (sanding) parts of a picture.
Through my work I want to express my view on life and my search for meaning and ways to deal with it.
Imperfection, solitude, vulnerability, mortality, transformation and transience are returning themes in my work. I’m interested in representing the inner life and emotions of a person.
The sanded and distorted photographs of young girls and boys are a reaction against the issues of our time, for instance the illusion of perfect beauty created by fashion/ advertising photography.
By sanding the surface of the photograph I undo the image of its superficiality and reveal its imperfection, vulnerability and fragility.
After the sanding process I reconstruct the image slowly by hand. I want to show the contrast between aggressive, fast media and sensitive, slow media.
With needlework I repair the canvas and create a new layer and relief on the image. By this I want to refer to almost forgotten crafts, like the dedicated nuns who embroidered in silence and solitude on mystical cloths. By using these delicate crafts, I like to estimate the importance of slowness, dedication and meaning in society. Likewise with the embroidery, a women craftsmanship, I want to refer to the position women have now and had earlier in history.
In my latest work I’m combining classical nude-poses with modern photography. With these works I want to refer to the romantic period of art, but with a more modern and critical approach.’’

Zhuang Hong Yi
|
July 9th - August 10th: Zhuang Hong Yi
PRESS RELEASE
From ‘Flower Series’
(Directly from the Zoetermeer Stadsmuseum
ZHUANG HONG YI opens a solo exhibition on the
9th of July at the gallery Houses of Art Marbella
Zhuang Hong Yi was born in Sichuan province (China) in 1962
Zhuang's work can be viewed as a journey across the world; wherever Zhuang goes, he gains new experiences and images which are reflected in his paintings. His work is ever evolving, growing ever richer and, consequently, ever surprising. China, the country where Zhuang was born and embarked on his education; Groningen, where he pursued his studies and now Amsterdam where he has his studio. However, Zhuang's work cannot be classified according to nationality. Asked if he is a Chinese artist living in Netherlands or a Dutch artist with a Chinese background, he says that, above all, he feels himself to be a multicultural and maybe even transnational artist. Creating associations between disparities is a recurring theme in his oeuvre. It seems as if Zhuang collects these contrasts so that he can then fuse them together in his works.
As a kind of materialised yin and yang, these fusions result in new and harmonious images. Viewed from a distance, the first impression is a strong image: strong in colour, in shape, in associations; sometimes abstract and sometimes with references to reality. A closer look reveals an image composed of shape elements: a kind of painted collage.
His work was exhibited in museums such as: Heerenveen, Zoetermeer Groningen and Beijing and in a lot of important exhibitions abroad. He is currently exhibiting in a prestigious gallery in New York
In 2008 the Chinese ministry of Culture selected the best 150 Chinese artists and Zhuang Hong Yi was among them.
Zhuang Hong Yi is a prime example of an artist who draws his inspiration from the environment he originates from and the environment in which he finds himself.
In Zhuang's work you can follow the story of his past in China; it testifies to great professional skill, in the way he addresses his materials. His experience in the Netherlands enables him to keep on adding new techniques to his mixed methods based on the use of rice paper. His period in the Groningen countryside, with its sharply-defined, infinite horizons, is echoed in his work. Wherever Zhuang goes, he gains experiences, processing them and approaching them with unquenchable enthusiasm and originality
Place: Houses of Art Marbella, Marbella Club Hotel, Blv. Alfonso von Hohenlohe Date: 9th of July until 10th of August 2010
Opening cocktail 9th of July at 20.30.

Owanto, Paris 1953 |
International artist based in Monaco, was born in Paris in 1953 to a French father and Gabonese mother. Her work can be found in private and public collections around the world. Owanto represented her motherland, the Republic of Gabon, in their deput at 53rd International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale in 2009.
Owanto uses pop, conceptual and minimal art in her creation of universal symbols, which remind spectators of where the solutions to our world may lie and how a society lacking moral strenght may begin to heal.
Using her sculptures as starting points, Owanto creates a series of icons which she presents in highly tecnical formats such as: light-boxes and traffic signs - mediums previously explored by Maurizio Cattelan, Rogelio Lopez Cuenca, Gabriel Acuna and Michael Pinsky. Owanto's discourse focusses on images of a family group and a child playing, which suggest a happier world to come.
The pieces have the double intention of alerting us to solutions to our global predicament, and of suggesting a change in governing attitudes and rules. The light-boxes, like torches and lighthouses, illuminate a future characterised by tolerance, unity and hope. "Fernando Francés, director of the CAC Málaga - Contemporary Art Center of Málaga, 2009).

Emma Fernandez |
Emma Fernández (Gijón in 1961). She is living in Madrid since 1974. Férnandez has a BA in Fine Arts, specialised in painting by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Emma uses for her creations women as an aesthetic argument, referring to feminine categories that are opposite such as docile, innocent, dependency, arrogance, seduction and excess, self-sufficient. Fernández synchronises art and technology by exploring the possibilities of technology with images from painting. Emma captures the image through video, photographs made by the artist with a digital camera, digitalization of photographic images by scanner and after she manipulates the image with software applications. Fernandez’s drawing and composition skills, her sensibility for textures, her photographic sense and collage have allowed her to develop her technique. Her vision is still a painter’s vision but full with the expressive possibilities that digital art gives. The work of Emma Fernández has been in many art fairs: FIART Valencia, Estampa, Art Madrid, and Fecha. Fernández has taken part in many solo and group exhibitions and her work is part of private collections such as: Telefónica, Banco Santander Central Hispano, and Foundation Kutxa. Throughout her career Emma has received many prizes.

Robbert Fortgens |
As a ‘born to be’ an abstract expressionist, Fortgens creates in his paintings a gesture that already encloses composition, movement, emotion and corporeity. He does not claim complicated games of form and colour looking for balance of opposite forces. For Fortgens, everything can be expressed in this only and dynamical element that appears to flow on a background of colour and texture. He seems to integrate himself into the artwork through the movement of his body-arm-paintbrush on a canvas. Body (action) and mind (creation) meet together in this element, as well as gesture and decision, passion and concept.
To the spectator, it’s been left the task of covering the drawn up trajectory, and that of feeling the pleasure of a soft fall or the dizziness of a gap over the emptiness, with all the emotions that emerge between one and another sensation. All without detriment of the interest that causes a surrounding scene full of plasticity. Born in 1960 in Utrecht, the Nederland, Robbert Fortgens works in IJmuiden, near Amsterdam where he lives.

Eduard Belsky, 1963 Ukraine |
Women are a prominent aspect of the content of his paintings. They are delicate, dreamy, graceful and somewhat unreal. Some of them appear as warriors with strong features and helmet-like hats adorning them. Others seem as though they might be priestesses full of ideas about the future and wisdom about life. These female characters are notably never specific and furthermore, Belsky does not work from live models or photographs. Many of the female portraits in fact, may be viewed as parts of Belsky himself - the artist's examination or exploration of the many facets which comprise his being.
While Belsky's style is often seen to reflect a great influence from the French school, it is still very much his own. His authorship is an integral part of each work as his signature brush strokes and colour compositions are unmistakably his.
The sensuality and visceral approach to his work lend it all a great sense of emotion. They are meditations and vessels of his emotional life and the profound travels of his mind and heart.
He is presenting to our feelings a world at once familiar and fantastic. Elements of the real, combine with and enjoy their counterparts from Belsky's
imagination.

INSPIRATION
The exhibited paintings come from two series of works:
Project "Ladies-catastrophes"
Fires, explosions, inundations.
They are not terrorists or accomplices or witnesses,
but their presence is the reason of catastrophe.
They are involuntary goddesses, makers of destinies.
And they are always safe and sound.
Sometimes they don't notice what is happening.
And of cause, they don't know they are the reason.
Motivation of project is to add a little irony in horror of
everyday life, television news, to create fairy tale.
And Project "Life Snapshots"
The exhibition unites works which, like snapshots, extract and capture the moments of everyday life and their aim is to hold the atmosphere of these moments. It consists of the feelings which one experiences while anticipating a discovery of a new city, pausing in front of a shop window or watching the eternal movement of the waves...

My works, if viewed from distance, appear almost as if they are realistic -you can see a stripe of sky or full moon while at the same time they are abstract. When you look more closely, one sees just strips of newspapers on canvas highlighted by either bright colours or hardened strokes of acrylic paint. Because I'm continually inspired from nature, I seek to send a clear message and my intention with my art is to inspire others to recycle whenever possible and promote sustainable living.
Working in acrylics on canvas I use waste in the form of using discarded newspapers. This means that I am reflecting the problems of contemporary life, by showing how they can be examined through an artist's practices and promoting alternatives to landfill and incineration. In this regard I have definitely found a key to a personal style and vision. One can easily distinguish my works by their bright colour, multilayered texture and cheerful mood. Using a wide colours scale in my works I would like to show everybody how through the use of colours it is possible to adjust the right energy to your style of living and thereby surround yourself with harmony and balance!

Fabrizio Corneli exhibition: Metaphors of opposites
The work of Fabrizio Corneli (Firenze, 1958) causes, above all, a surprise, a mystery and wonder, making the visual experience a real adventure of perception. Based on the relationship between light and shadow it can be seen as a polysemous metaphors mechanism just to place perceptual experience in the foreground.
Corneli's work is painting without painting and sculpture with no volume that turns the space, forcing constant interaction.
The shape is the shadow. The image is constructed by darkness coming from light.
The procedure is simple, but involves a complex process of conception and execution.
Fabrizio Corneli uses light like a solid material to activate sets of perception through very precise use of the perspective that work with shadows and reflections.
Mathematics and the calculation becomes a methodology of systematic dematerialization of the work.
It brings together optical research and different traditions of perspective, used since the Renaissance but reinterpreted for the contemporary time and for an open vision. The shadow works well as an expanded area of geometry.
Corneli's work echoes these paradoxes and resonances, standing outside of any stream, but at the core of the experiments on visual perception. While the international art scene light and shade have been crafted from a variety of perspectives, it is difficult to find a project as consistent and rigorous as that of Corneli, which is distinguished by linking a traditional manufacturing with mathematical calculations, where the role of the technology is minimal and generally limited to optical.
The evanescent outlines melt into the halo of light in a complex Renaissance perspective. It is an image made of shadow, impalpable and immaterial, and it takes on physical consistency thanks to the neutral wall. On the wall cuttings of aluminium have been carefully placed: they are apparently formless, shaped according to the laws of Anamorphism. A metallic iodide lamp, placed down, lights up the wall with a razor-like light, interfering with the shapes which project their shadows and making the figure recognizable once more. This sculpture stimulates the observer into thinking about how images are elaborated and comprehended, giving form to the principles of physics, the laws of optics and geometry that subtend the genesis of the work - undoubtedly revealing their aesthetic potential. The impact of the image is deliberately dilated in time, unlike communication in today’s world.
The destabilization of the rules of visual language and the reconstruction of a new reality through the illusion are a constant in Corneli’s work. Like a medieval alchemist, Fabrizio Corneli investigates the laws of physics, especially the light-shadow dualism. He seeks a primitive creative instinct which sinks its roots in the seductive charm of solar light.

About the artist
He recently exhibited in a prestigious gallery in New York. This year his work will be presented at the three most important art fairs in the world like Art Basel, Tefaf (Holland) and Miami Art Basel.
