ARTIST INFORMATION
Marlies van Boekel studied at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. There she started painting waves and folds. In her recent series ‘Brekend Licht’ (Breaking light) she plays with the movement of water. The water breaks the light. The shapes that are under water are distorted, blurry and different coloured. They become one with the water. Water does not have colour, but adapts the colour from the environment. Because both the swimmer and the water are constantly moving, different combinations of shapes and colours keep showing. Photographs are at the base of the work. The human eye is not fast enough to see and remember the exact distortions of the swimmers. Marlies paints them in a very realistic way, but uses her own accents and colours to create a personal image.
