ARTIST INFORMATION

Monica van Dael works in the so-called “taille direct” technique. This means that she works directly on the stone, without using a sketch or preceding study. Because of this, the characteristics of the stone are always defining for the eventual result, which makes the shapes of the sculptures very natural. Monica van Dael makes what she wants to portray more and more abstract, until the core figure remains: The archetype of her subject. This creates a pleasant tension between reality and fantasy in her sculptures. Her works evoke affection from the onlooker because of their great recognizability.
