ARTIST INFORMATION

Jan Steen (1938) is a multi-talented artist. He is a sculptor, painter and performer. Those performances are indissolubly attached to his art. They are the base of his sculptures and paintings that show twiggy, winged warriors and birdpeople. The frail figures, that sometimes remind us of Giacommetti, are alternating vulnerable or proud and self conscious. The sculptures appear to be a still from a much longer story. Jan Steen studied to be a sculptor at the Art Academy Minverva in Groningen. His success started soon after that. Gallery owners and musea know the way to his studio and gallery in the most Northern part of Holland. His work is part of many private and public collections, among which the collection of ‘Gasuni’, the university of Groningen and media mogul Joop van den Ende.
